Transforming existing buildings with fine, minute tooling is the aspect of interior design architect Vico Magistretti addresses in the exhibition entitled “Interni milanesi - Architetture domestiche di Vico Magistretti” (Milanese interiors – Home interiors by Vico Magistretti), presented by Vanni Pasca with Manuela Leoni and promoted by Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti.
The exhibition focuses on nine apartments, presenting them in three stages: a travelling exhibition which will be renewed three times during the course of the year with new material, alternating freehand sketches with images by some of Italy’s greatest photographers.
The works under examination represent two types of project implemented by architect Magistretti: use of a number of spatial constants (stairways, chimneys, specially shaped openings, etc.) attributable to his contemporary interpretation of Adolf Loos’s theory of the Raumplan, the relationship between inside and outside, and juxtaposition of different materials; the second type pertains to furniture design, with apparently random combinations of antique furniture and custom-designed items.
Under a partnership with the Casali Archive kept by IUAV in Venice, the exhibition will also include numerous photographs by Giorgio Casali, who constantly documented Vico Magistretti’s work as official photographer for Domus magazine (between 1951 and 1983).
