Gustafson Guthrie Nichol + Davis Brody Bond, National Mall
The National Mall is a monumental street about 3 km long running from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, containing the Washington Monument and located close to the White House and other landmarks in US history.

A public park and site of protest marches, events and historic happenings, the National Mall is visited by more than 25 million people every year.
The need for a flexible space and the criteria of sustainability and creative design guided the architects of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol + Davis Brody Bond in their work.

The project includes a big monumental central space created by the historic Memorial Grant and a pool. The two bodies of water on paved surfaces have diagonal paths encouraging the public to take over the space in the water and humanise it. Around the outside, terraces and low walls form areas like outdoor rooms where people can get together and/or perform a variety of activities.
