Vitra Design Museum presents an exhibition on the theme of electric light – explored through art, design, architecture and other disciplines.

Exhibition Lightopia Vitra Design Museum

Lightopia, focuses on roughly 300 works from the lighting collection of Vitra Design Museum. It showcases a collection of lighting design artefacts and projects to examine various aspects of this sector and places it within the context of contemporary debate. For example, it poses the question of how to deal with the problem of excessive artificial lighting, of what is known as light pollution, and of how to use light to protect natural resources.

The items displayed are designed by Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Achille Castiglioni, Gino Sarfatti and Ingo Maurer just to mention a few of the designers and artists involved. These works are used to explain how the discovery of electric light in the 19th century revolutionised the life and environment of humans more than any other invention. Through the items showcased, the exhibition covers the history of electric light from the beginnings of industrial society to modern times and looks to the future with LED technology and other solutions like lights that can be integrated into textiles, facades etc.
