Jerry House by studio Onion, designing for kids

Thai architecture firm, Onion has designed the perfect, child-friendly holiday house. Jerry House is just begging for kids of all ages to play, experiment, interpret and discover: a real paradise!



Arisara Chaktranon and Siriyot Chaiamnuay from Thai studio Onion designed Jerry House, a holiday house in Cha Am Beach, famous seaside resort in the gulf of Thailand, for a family from Bangkok with four children, who expressly requested a building that would encourage play for their children.





The architects didn’t need to be asked twice and gave free rein to their creativity, drawing inspiration from the famous Tom and Jerry cartoons, and using Jerry the mouse’s house as the starting point for this multi-level, rectangular building.



The Onion architects had lots of fun creating the interior design as a mouse’s house with small niches and tunnels connecting the various rooms, all dotted with holes that reference a Swiss cheese. 





The main living zone on the ground floor – where the family spends most of its time together – has large windows opening onto the garden. This forms the basis for the project’s core: a full-height atrium that features ladders, overlooked by the rooms contained in the three upper floors. White is the main colour used in all the common areas, while the bedrooms are made personal and unique with all different bright colours.



The atrium itself is a real playground: a plastic net separates each level from the next and you can move to the top floors on the ladders and drop down from net to net as if you were in an adventure park or even use them to climb up – jumping, sliding, dropping, crawling, climbing – just like a mouse.



These nets are open to the imagination, and the children have all the space they need to play freely. The photos show how much fun it all is, not just for the little kids.
One thing is certain: in the Jerry House by Onion, holidays are a sure-fire success, happily confirmed by the house owners.
