The Iris Ceramica Group’s London showroom is located at 61-67 Old Street in Clerkenwell, the heart of creativity in London. In line with the neighbourhood’s dynamic spirit, Italian architectural studio Area 17 designed the showroom to be a place encouraging creativity, networking and teamwork: the ideal seat for the British judges in the 2022 Architectural Photography Awards, who began their work before sharing the proposals received with all the judges in the prestigious photography competition, now in its 10th edition. The shortlist of selected candidates will be exhibited at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 30 November through 2 December 2022 at FIL in Lisbon, where delegates will also have an opportunity to vote. Judges and spectators are asked to look beyond the architecture itself and consider the composition, lighting, scale, atmosphere, sense of place and understanding of the project portrayed in the photograph.
The competition is a great success, judging by the significant increase in submissions, with the participation of photographers from 64 different countries, as compared to 42 countries in 2021. Candidates can compete in six different categories. The four main ones are Exterior, Interior, Sense of Place, and Buildings in Use; then there are the Portfolio - Transport Hubs and Mobile - Bridges categories. The Architectural Photography Awards focus on the experience of photographers specialising in architecture, legibly and understandably translating the refinement of architecture into two dimensions to explain and underline the character, details and context of the project. There are no limits to interpretation and creativity, and the goal of the award is to showcase new talents and help artists to grow, promoting the art of photographing architecture.
The Iris Ceramica Group’s partnership with The Architectural Photography Awards 2022 provided the British judges with the perfect setting for their task and drew attention to Iris Ceramica’s London Flagship Store, a designer showroom on three levels in an industrial-style building totalling almost 600 square metres.
On the ground floor, an elegant, exclusive lounge links interior with exterior through large windows, connecting the showroom with its urban surroundings. Next to the bar is a casual lounge area encouraging people to stop and chat.
It is only logical that ceramic maxi-slabs should play a prominent role in a ceramics showroom, defining the character of surfaces and furnishings and leading visitors to the showrooms on the other levels.
The first level focuses on collections developed in partnership with Diesel Living. The bold character of these materials goes perfectly with the architecture, creating flexible areas that can be used as co-working spaces, conference rooms or event venues. This is where the judges met to examine the submissions for The Architectural Photography Awards 2022.
We look forward to receiving the shortlist for the awards, though we will have to wait until the end of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) to find out who has been named the world’s best architecture photographer!
