Hyatt Place Hotel Sanya Cina by BLVD International Chinese firm BLVD is behind the interior design project for the Hyatt Place Hotel Sanya, on China’s Hainan Island. A project that consolidates the collaboration between BLVD International and the hotel group, this time in a building designed by Wood Bagots.

Sanya is the southernmost city on Hainan Island. The city is renowned for its tropical climate and has emerged as a popular tourist destination; it is also known as China's Florida because it attracts a large number of retirees from northeast China during winter. The island of Wuzhizhou is also one of the attractions here: its coral reefs are a popular destination for divers, surfers and other water sports enthusiasts. Hainan Island has often been called the Chinese Hawaii, and indeed, it is the only tropical beach destination in China, located at the same latitude as the American islands.
Large beach hotels have been built on the beaches of the many bays overlooking the South China Sea. One of the most recent of these is the Sunshine Financial Plaza, the tallest building in the city of Sanya, designed by architecture firm Woods Bagot. This 37-storey mixed-used tower sits on top of tiered retail podiums and landscaped gardens, which the public can access. The development combines offices, the Hyatt Place Hotel, a private clubhouse and a rooftop pool.
The Chinese firm BLVD International, which has partnered with Hyatt Place for years, was again tasked with the interior design of this Hyatt Place Hotel Sanya. By developing the interior design simultaneously with the tower's architectural concept, BLVD was able to best coordinate the physical functions and emotional aesthetic of the hotel's interiors in keeping with the tropical landscape and climate.
Without losing sight of the global visual identity of the Hyatt Place brand, the BLVD International design for the Hyatt Place Hotel Sanya draws on the visual symbols of the culture of Sanya, giving guests a fresh, natural experience where every design choice references the backdrop of the island. So, there is the allusion to waves in lots of spaces with curved patterns, accompanied by images of oceans, beaches and forests, in an ongoing reference to the tropical landscape that defines the charm of Hainan island.
The project by BLVD International aims at achieving a specific balance between the needs of people who are travelling for pleasure and those who are on business trips. You can see this in particular in the recreation areas where the structured sidewalls, bamboo partitions and other symbols with distinctive cultural imprints mean they meet the functional needs and at the same time connect with the regional context, its architectural styles and its environment.
The real highlight of the Hyatt Place Hotel Sanya is the outdoor rooftop swimming pool, which offers stunning views of the coastal city. The lounge area and pool together form a large environment that seems to blend outdoors and indoors, architecture and nature, all because of the lush plants and the use of locally-sourced stone and wood for the pathways - paying homage to the seaside boardwalks.
