Avant Chelsea, an apartment building in New York. 1100 Architect.

Living in the big city can be very convenient: close to work, shops and lots of leisure time opportunities. But what is often missing is some individual space to withdraw and recover from the frantic pace of metropolitan life.

But it is possible to get around this problem even on a limited budget, as demonstrated by 1100 Architect, a practice founded by David Piscuskas, FAIA, LEED AP and Jürgen Riehm, FAIA, BDA with offices in New York and Frankfurt.
Avant Chelsea is a housing development designed on the basis of balanced use of standardised wall and window elements which, along with low maintenance façade solutions, help cut the building’s overall costs.

The building’s 12 levels contain 19 apartments with balconies on the northern side of the sixth, seventh and eighth floors. The top four floors contain Penthouse apartments, each with its own private outdoor area that seems to be cut into the solid volume to give the building a terraced look.

The façades overlooking the street are made of glass set in anodized aluminium frames. The side facing the internal courtyard (southwest) is covered with 2500 fibre cement panels in various shades of blue to create a mosaic, underlining the building’s asymmetrical form in its skin.
