New regional headquarters of the United Nations designed by 3XN open in Copenhagen.

3XN UN City Copenhagen

The UN City project by 3XN architectural studio brings together all the United Nations offices in Copenhagen in a single symbolic building. The shape of a star with 8 points radiating out in different directions represents the values and the independence of each UN agency despite their unified intent. The chosen site is a man-made island which is highly visible from the city yet isolated for obvious security reasons.
From a dark burnished steel base, the building rises covered with white perforated aluminium shutters, a colour chosen to pay homage to the ships sailing into the port of Copenhagen.

The building?s central core contains all the common areas and the atrium, with a sculptural staircase linking all the levels, in the architects? intention a symbol of meeting and dialogue between people from all over the world.
The complex incorporates numerous technical measures to promote sustainability and create flexible working environments that promote sharing of knowledge and interaction while also permitting concentration and individual work.
