Vudafieri-Saverino Partners Artissima 2017 in Turin
Vudafieri-Saverino Partners,

Tiziano Vudafieri and Claudio Saverino, founders of the Milanese architectural studio Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, addressed the difficult problem of representing contemporary art at Artissima 2017. For the 42th edition of Italy’s biggest art show held at the OVAL in Turin November 3 through 5, 2017, the architects were asked to come up with a new layout for the fair based on a new criterion for the layout of the pavilions and to design installations for special projects featured in the show.

What better source of inspiration than the city’s urban layout? The architects reproduced the grid of Baroque Turin and recreated its traffic routes, consisting of big plazas and avenues, parallel and at right angles. This distinction allowed them to allocate the biggest spaces, the plazas, to the special projects featured at the show. The patio of the Oval in its privileged position overlooking the display area contains an elegant restaurant, a bistro and a VIP Lounge, nicknamed “Thonetiana” in honour of the inventors of the famous Thonet bent wood furniture. The theme of places to stroll and sit in the city appears again in the VIP Lounge, evoking the coffee-shops and bourgeois salons of late nineteenth-century Turin with views over the city.
