Michiya Tsukano’s residential project, which won a special mention in Floornature’s 2013 Next Landmark International Architecture Contest, underlines the clear distinction between the interior of the home and the city outside. The outdoor space is completely redesigned within the walls, shutting out all visual and acoustic elements that could disturb the inhabitants of the home in this inhospitable city landscape.

Awarded a special mention for best first project in Next Landmark 2013, the second international architecture contest, Giorgi Khmaladze’s project is a strong urban landmark in a new district in Batumi, Georgia. Occupying only a small piece of ground, the building combines a service station with a McDonalds restaurant so that the two services complement one another.

The winners of the second international Next Landmark contest, held by Floornature to draw attention to the work of young architects all over the world, are Shoko and Naoto Murakaji, whose residential building on the Japanese island of Irimote interacts with the landscape around it. Materials have been chosen carefully to respond to the demands of the location, and the form of the construction ensures that the building’s natural surroundings can communicate with it.

Baan Dumneon, holiday home in Thailand

On the basis of the principles of bioarchitecture, Methus Srisuchart and Ginggal Metchanun have built a holiday home in the Damnoen Saduak district near Bangkok, which they entered in the Next Landmark international architecture contest organized by Floornature. The building’s orientation, use of local materials and the flexibility of the walls permitting natural ventilation are the principles underlining the design of the project, with its form inspired by traditional Thai homes.

“Roca dels Moros” rock paintings visitors’ centre

Architects Prudenci Espanol Pons and José Ángel Hidalgo Arellano, finalists in the first international “Next Landmark” architecture contest organised by Floornature, presented their plans for a visitors’ centre for the “Roca dels Moros” rock paintings in El Cogul, Catalonia. The structure and materials of this partially underground construction are intended to minimise its impact on the landscape.

A finalist in Floornature’s first “Next Landmark” international architecture contest, the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium, a secondary school designed by franz zt gmbh, is a carbon-neutral building on the Deutsch-Wagram school campus in Austria. It is constructed in the form of two blocks embracing a pond which provides a visual focus for the project, while the rooftop terrace and free areas with informal seating create a concept of contemporary architecture for education.
