Otxotorena Arquitectos Alicante Psycho-social Rehabilitation Centre

The design by Otxotorena Arquitectos which won the competition for ideas is a regular rectangle with a strong horizontal orientation containing the Psycho-social Rehabilitation Centre in the Dr. Esquerdo Centre complex in San Juan de Alicante, Spain.

The Psycho-social Rehabilitation Centre is intended for patients who do not require hospitalisation but have serious mental problems and functional/social deficits. The facility is accessed through a single entrance. Functions are distributed over three areas, one facing outwards, one facing the garden, and a large central area for recreational activities.
A series of courtyards lets daylight into the building and ensures the intimacy required in various different spaces. A system of visual and physical filters solves the problem of control and movement of staff, users and visitors in the centre.
The length of the external façade is interrupted by a system of vertical panels used as a sunshade and filter; on the inside wall, overlooking the garden, the trees perform this function.
