"Materials Semantics in Design Applications": Talk and Workshop in Dubai

Dubai,

Iris Ceramica Group, contest Local Cultures in Global Settings,

First stop in Dubai for the "Local Cultures in Global Settings" international contest promoted by the Iris Ceramica Group and its Foundation, and curated by UAE Modern. On May 22 and 23, the Canadian University Dubai will host "Materials Semantics in Design Applications", a talk featuring important guests from the world of design and a workshop aimed at students inspired by the works of the Brazilian master Roberto Burle Marx.

Dubai is ready to host an important event for the community of designers working in the UAE. After its initial launch in Milan, the "Local Cultures in Global Settings" contest promoted by the Iris Ceramica Groupand its Foundation and curated by UAE Modern, will be presented at the Canadian University Dubai, also offering the opportunity to discover the innovative "Design Your Slabs" technology developed by the Iris Ceramica Group. In fact, the Group's innovative materials will be showcased during the event, illustrating the infinite possibilities offered by this ceramic printing technology.

The talk, entitled "Materials Semantics in Design Applications", will address some key issues in the contemporary profession: the scarcity of resources, the increase in energy costs and the inequalities generated by the exploitation of our planet are driving us to change our approach to materials and, in particular, to consider what is now waste as new resources. Materials not only play a fundamental role in shaping the world we live in, but they are also bearers of intrinsic symbolic and emotional expressions. It is therefore natural to ask ourselves: "em>What impacts will the evolution of the material culture have on users’ perception and their ties with space?". This is the very theme that speakers invited to the talk will discuss through their experiences and their most iconic projects: Steven Velegrinis, design director of Gensler; Jonathan Ashmore, founder of ANARCHITECT; and MAK, founder and director of KDSV, moderated by UAE Modern.
Parallel to the talk, architecture and design students from the Canadian University Dubai and the De Montford University will participate in a workshop inspired by the works of Roberto Burle Marx, experimenting with the relationship between colour, shape and material. A drawing by the Brazilian landscape architect will be used as a backdrop for the composition of new patterns made with local sand and gravel, which will subsequently be digitally processed to become images supporting the "Local Cultures in Global Settings" contest.
