Italian designer Luca Gnizio reinterprets design as communication, making the object into a vehicle for environmental issues. The results are interesting as the idea is not to view the object as an element which can be reproduced an infinite number of times, but as an item which can be reproduced in order to communicate.

Design from scrap denim

ForOCEANJeans is a series of chairs and benches made of iron and denim. The project is a way of disposing of and recycling jeans. The resulting objects are made by social cooperatives (providing work for the unemployed and differently able), combining the ethical principle of ecology with that of social support. A form of communication through an object, a concept which is increasingly popular among the new generation of designers.

Moreover, according to the designer, the juxtaposition of different waves of jeans creates a multi-coloured effect like the colours of the sea: a reference to water, intended to underline the manufacturers’ commitment to reducing wastage of valuable water resources in the production of the chairs.
