Winners of the 2011: Why Tall? Competition announced!

The winners of the 2011: Why Tall? Student Tall Building Competition were chosen from among 32 finalists on display at the recent 2011 Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) World Conference in Seoul, South Korea. The competition challenged students from around the world to examine the role and value of tall buildings in modern society in terms of environmental sustainability, safety and humanity. With no restrictions on site, program or size, a very diverse range of over 200 proposals was submitted.

First prize was awarded to MultipliCITY by Xiaokai Huang, Dong Jin and Lingyun Yang of Harvard University (United States) and Tongji University (China).

Cloud Skycraper, designed by Sungjin Jang, Hojun Choi, Yohwan Jo, Youngshin Kim, Sewook Son, Yonsei University (Korea) and Hyunkyu Lim, Kyunkook University (Korea), took second place.

Third place recognized Vertical Neighborhood, by Daniel Sacristán Contreras of the Escuela Tecnica de Arquitectura de Madrid (Spain).

Special mention was given to Culture Transcend, by Davin Tanasa, University of Melbourne (Australia).

According to the 2011 Jury Chair, William Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox Architects, "There has been a major transition in the sense of the value of the tall building and what it can contribute to the urban realm, and society in general. This transition moves the tall building away from just an instrument of financial exploitation and toward a development highly concerned with its impact on the city, the environment, and the urban habitat. Bringing students together from all over the world, as this competition has done, is an important step for the evolution of the tall building typology."
