Streckhof reloaded. Single-family home, franz zt

The “Streckhof” is a particular form of farmhouse in eastern and south-eastern Austria, in which the home, the stables and the shelter are aligned along long, shallow lots.

Franz Architekten bring back the model in their design for a single-family home, using modern construction techniques with a view to saving both money and energy.

As in an old farmhouses, various functions are grouped together in three container shaped volumes: the garage and entrance hall, the living area and the “bedrooms” at the back, far away from the road. The volumes create inner courtyards, one of which is set up as a sundeck with a swimming pool, while the other is a vegetable garden.

The brick walls around the outside, rock wool thermal insulation and clear plexiglas façade were built by the client, while the roof is made of prefabricated wooden elements. The corridors joining the volumes were built like bridges, also out of wood.

Special care is paid to the home’s energy balance. It has underfloor heating, while hot water is produced with a geothermal collector and two heat pumps. The controlled ventilation system recovers heat and the pool is heated by a solar collector on the roof.

A skilful combination of traditional architecture with eco-friendly technologies.
