Green transformation proposed for the Eiffel Tower

The proposal by the Ginger Group for a “green” transformation of the Eiffel Tower could help eliminate an estimated 87.8 tons of carbon dioxide from the air of Paris. Some 600,000 plants in bags of soil in a hemp or sisal net would be attached to the metal structure, transforming the iconic French monument into a tapestry of greenery, symbolizing France’s commitment to a sustainable future.

The plants would be added gradually from the ground up, visually simulating the growth of one large plant. The south and east sides of the tower would have thermophilic plants well-suited for a dry environment, whereas the north and west sides would be hung with different varieties of ivy, chosen for its phytopurification properties, as well as evergreens and semi-evergreens.

This extensive network of plants would rely on an automated irrigation system which delivers water enriched with trace elements to the plants via rubber tubes and a drip-feed system.

The project would cost an estimated 72 million Euros to complete and add a total of 378 tons of weight to the original structure. If approved, this transformation could begin as soon as mid-2012.
