GLOBALE. The new artistic event in the digital era.

As we write, the city of Karlsruhe in Germany is celebrating its 300 years of existence, and opening at the same time is a 300-day event - GLOBALE - covering the contemporary themes of globalisation and digitalisation.

ZKM Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (Centre for arts and media technology) is a one-of-a-kind in the world, a place that extends the museum's original mission and turns into a house hosting all the media across every sector. From “spatial” arts like painting, photography and sculpture to “temporal” arts like film, video, media art, music, dance, theatre and performance.

Since 1989, ZKM in Karlsruhe has accompanied our transition across the Anthropocene era, where human activities have had such devastating effects on the natural world. A period where sciences, technology and politics are integrating the art system in our increasingly global world.
Globalisation made possible thanks to the digital revolution that opened the era of the “infosphere”, which consists of the planet-wide network of radio connections via electromagnetic waves - from radio to TV with phone, satellite and the Internet in between. A system that is now as necessary to our lifestyles as the air itself, that enables us to communicate and share.





For 300 days GLOBALE explores aspects of the cultural effects of this globalisation and digitalisation with a multitude of events spread across the city of Karlsruhe, established in 1715 with a Baroque scheme, where 32 roads lead outwards from the castle. 



A leap into the past and into the present...and a giant leap forward into the near future!
