Descension exhibition by Anish Kapoor Galleria Continua in San Gimignano is exhibiting the work “Descension” by Indian artist Anish Kapoor, a 'horror vacui' represented by an installation with a huge visual impact. A void, a vacuum becomes artistic content.

Descension, the personal exhibition by artist, Anish Kapoor at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano welcomes visitors with a series of new alabaster sculptures. These clearly defined, sculpted artworks give visitors a sense of eternity simply because they invite you to think about the concept of the infinite.

The heart of the works exhibited in the spectacular backdrop of the gallery's movie theatre, and which also gives the name to the actual exhibition is an installation where the void becomes the true focus of the artistic representation. A counterpoint to the sculptures using fine material and the formal continuation of “Descent into Limbo”, displayed in 1992 at Documenta IX, where a cube housed a black hole in the floor, described by Kapoor as “a space full of darkness, not a hole in the ground”.

Conversely, at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano “Descension” is vortex, flow and movement that calls into question our perception of the earth as something solid and reliable.
Anish Kapoor gives us a vacuum, a term that references the 'horror vacui', with a destabilising power.

Instead, for Kapoor, the vacuum - in this case put into relation with the solidness of the alabaster sculptures - is the run-up to creation: “I have always thought of the vacuum as a transitory space. And all of this has a lot to do with time. I have always been interested in the creative moment when everything is possible and nothing has occurred yet. The vacuum is that moment in time before creation, when anything is possible”.
The Descension exhibition is running until 5 September 2015.
