52 Social Housing Building in Catalonia by Aguilera Guerrero Arquitectos.

Catalan architecture firm, Aguilera Guerrero Arquitectos approaches Social Housing design by referencing the “garden city”, in other words their approach respects both the landscape and the needs of the inhabitants.



As the architects from the Catalan firm, Aguilera Guerrero Arquitectos explain, the project aims for a fine balance between the economy of the media, the urban planning policy and the desire to give inhabitants a home that combines privacy and shared spaces.



The challenge lay in the site’s irregular slope, juxtaposed with the horizontal layout of terrace houses. Each single-family unit is structured on two levels, with the living zone on the ground floor, complete with an extension onto the small adjoining courtyard, and the sleeping area on the upper floor.





The volumes are grouped into blocks of 2 to 7 units, according to the site’s topography, and are painted white and grey, with brightly coloured front doors breaking the monotony. The solid appearance is broken up by balconies and voids where louvers guarantee both privacy and the regulation of ventilation and natural lighting in the interiors, without the need for air-conditioning systems.



The complex sits snugly on the gentle slope, offering inhabitants a delightful view of the green lung.



Just one more demonstration by the Catalan based firm that the challenge of designing sustainable Social Housing to suit human beings can be won using simple, elegant measures.
