A new success for the architectural studio BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, which has won the competition for the National Gallery of Greenland with a project that aspires to the status of cultural and architectural icon for the people of Greenland. BIG’s project is a huge ring with an open courtyard surrounded by walls made entirely out of glass. The area chosen for the project is a sloped lot overlooking one of the country’s most beautiful fjords, and the museum is modelled entirely on the inclination, as are the routes inside it. The inclination generates dynamism in a structure that needs to combine historical and contemporary art. BIG’s project was selected by the jury from a shortlist of six projects submitted by Sn?hetta, Heikkinen, Komonen, Studio Granda and Greenlandic Tegnestuen Nuuk.
