The BMW Guggenheim Lab was launched in 2011 and is a joint initiative of the Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation and the BMW Group, with graphic design by Sulki & Min and architecture by the Japanese husband-and-wife team at Atelier Bow-Wow.
The very articulated programme includes design projects, workshops, conferences, guided tours and cultural activities that address challenges and opportunities related to public space and the community, on a global journey that continues through its dedicated social networks and blog.
In Mumbai, the BMW Guggenheim LAB structure will be modified to integrate with the local environment. The architecture firm of Atelier Bow-Wow designed a new structure modelled after the Indian mandapa, a raised outdoor pavilion traditionally used for public celebrations and events, constructed primarily of bamboo, a popular local building material. The lab?s main L-shaped structure will be situated under a canopy of shade trees in the gardens of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, and a series of satellite sites will be set up throughout the city to involve as many users as possible.
