Ignatov Architects: new offices constructed on the historical building
The historical, heritage protected architecture of a warehouse in the centre of Varna, Bulgaria, has driven Ignatov Architects to design a new structure that blends in with the existing building. The architects constructed the top floor offices, setting up an interesting dialogue between the ruins and the new building. The project materials – old stone, glass and aluminium – create strong visual contrasts in the city’s new landmark.

Mehdizadeh: architecture with recycled cladding in Mahallat
Ramin Mehdizadeh in Mahallat is an example of a housing complex and shopping centre in which contemporary architecture is rooted in local tradition. Inspired by the presence of stone quarries in the area, the project uses scrap stone from quarry processes as a cladding material: a sustainable, money-saving project that has won the favour of local builders and been shortlisted for the 2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
