The Vertical Panorama Pavilion, a cozy and convivial space where art, design and architecture are combined with nature and good wine, was recently opened in California. The project was designed by Studio Other Spaces, established in Berlin by the artist Olafur Eliasson and the architect Sebastian Behmann. The pavilion is located in a scenic setting amidst vineyards and a collection of site-specific artwork by Donum, one of California's leading Pinot Noir producers.

One of California's leading Pinot Noir producers, Donum, has recently opened the Vertical Panorama Pavilion, a cozy and convivial space where art, design and architecture are combined with nature and good wine. This facility was built on Donum's estate in Sonoma, Northern California. Designed by the artist Olafur Eliasson and the architect Sebastian Behmann of Studio Other Spaces, the pavilion is a place specifically intended for wine tastings, where visitors can enjoy a sensory journey and explore the environment in which wine is produced through visual, sound and olfactory experiences.
The site in which the pavilion is to be built is a very special spot in the estate. In fact, here visitors can take in scenic views of the vineyards, of San Pablo Bay and even of The Donum Collection, the site-specific art collection by Mei and Allan Warburg, the owners of the Donum Estate. There are more than 50 large outdoor sculptures and installations on the estate, which were created by world famous artists such as Ai Weiwei, Ghada Amer, Doug Aitken, Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Keith Haring, and Subodh Gupta. In this setting, the concept of the pavilion is also based on a strong synergy between art and architecture, and is a privileged location offering panoramic views, where visitors can enjoy an experience that will appeal to all the senses. It has a conical roof with a north-facing central oculus. It is also covered with 832 stained glass panels depicting the annual averages of the four environmental parameters that need to be taken into consideration when growing grapes: solar radiation, wind intensity, temperature, and humidity. The chosen colors are those of the Sonoma Valley, which once again highlights the relationship with the land and the surrounding vineyards, while the architecture incorporates the elements and microclimates that have played a part in producing this fine wine.
