Snøhetta presents plans for Presidio Parklands in San Francisco

5 architectural studios (CMG Landscape Architecture, James Corner Field Operations, Snøhetta, Lin and Ovest 8 Team) were asked to present plans for the Presidio area in San Francisco.
The Presidio was a military area protecting the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco for two centuries, and is now an area measuring more than 600 hectares available for redevelopment. Putting part of the raised freeway underground frees a 13 hectare area in which to link the city’s waterfront with the historic Presidio district, permitting direct access to the beach and to views of the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as a Visitors’ Centre.
The 5 architectural studios invited to present projects faced the challenge of designing a place inspired by history but capable of meeting the needs of today, open to a multicultural city and offering the potential for people to meet, have fun, stay fit and learn.
The project presented by Snøhetta under the title Arcs & Strands redraws the links within the area, underlining natural and built elements of the landscape of San Francisco Bay such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island and Alcatraz and creating tactile spaces in which visitors are caught up in a sensorial experience of getting to know nature.
