GMP Architekten was appointed to design the new stadium to host the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan. It is due to be completed in March 2012.
Designed and built in record time - only eight months - the steel building is shaped like a crystal. The architects of GMP have created a multi-functional stadium, not a classic concert hall. The structure has three separate parts: a façade consisting of a steel membrane, a modular stadium structure and an internal roof.
The façade has a lighting system made up of 9500 LEDs permitting customised programming of lighting to suit the type of event underway.
Crystal shaped lighting is the architects? response to the request for a building which would act as a link between Asia and Europe thanks to the visibility offered by the international song contest.
