The UEFA EURO 2016 European football championships begin on June 10th in France, and four of the ten stadiums that will be hosting the games are still under construction, while six have been renovated to meet UEFA standards. Cardete Huet architectural studio won the design competition for renovation of Toulose stadium and Bollaert-Delelis stadium in Lens.
In Bollaert-Delelis stadium in Lens, the architects worked on a structure referred to as "English-style", composed of four separate stands in the centre of the town of Lens. The first step was therefore to adapt a structure almost a century old, built in 1933, to respond to UEFA’s many requirements, including high safety standards, improve visitor reception and services and the visibility of the playing field, adding a new translucent roof, etc. The new metal structure supporting the roof, with its pure, light forms, has become the symbol of the renewed stadium, which, along with the nearby Louvre-Lens, is part of a redevelopment project for the city’s important cultural facilities.
To integrate the stadium into the city around it, the architects redeveloped the area around the construction, eliminating the entrances in the plaza and making it into a pedestrian zone, planting 450 trees to ensure greater continuity between the sports facility and its existing natural surroundings.
