Hempitecture. Crowdfunding for a green project. Hempitecture is a North American innovation and design start-up that is driving creativity in the US Green Building market, aiming to use hemp combined with other natural materials like minerals and water to build healthy architecture and minimise the carbon footprint.

Matthew Mead and Tyler Mauri are the founders of the US start-up, Hempitecture. The goal of these two young architects is to spread the “green building” word as naturally as possible, using industrial hemp as a building material.

Hemp is a rapid-growing broadleaf plant that requires very little irrigation or chemical pest control. It returns over 40% of its biomass to the soil, as a natural fertiliser and it is used to make an energy-efficient, non-toxic, carbon-negative and all natural building material called hempcrete. All pluses for this eclectic material that has been widely used throughout history in the textile and paper industry.

So, Hempitecture decided to design a sustainable development project for the Idaho BaseCamp – the first non-residential industrial hemp building in the USA. Idaho BaseCamp is a sustainable education facility, so what better place for their project than here, where the team will be using hempcrete packed into a wall form to create a breathable wall system that improves overall energy performance and makes the interior environment healthier at the same time.

To raise the funds they need for the project, Hempitecture has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. You still have a few days left if you want to donate to this initiative with the green spirit, which could mark a real turning point in the US to promote an intrinsically sustainable building material.
