The best new buildings in Tyrol, exhibition and winners at the aut.architektur und tirol

Every two years, the Province of Tyrol, in collaboration with the professional associations of architects and engineers of the territories involved and the Innsbruck aut.architektur und tirol architecture centre awards the "Auszeichnung des Landes Tirol für Neues Bauen", a prize reserved for buildings built in Tyrol. The prize focuses on buildings completed in the last two years, from 2020 to 2022, considered exemplary for the territory in terms of architectural challenges, both from an aesthetic point of view and with respect to the innovations adopted.
The 2022 edition ended on November 10 with the announcement of the winners and, at the same time, with the inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to the competing works, open to the public until February 18, 2023 at the aut.architektur und tirol in Innsbruck, Austria.

The award jury, composed of architect Sonja Gasparin from the Gasparin & Meier Architekten studio, architect and professor Florian Nagler (Technische Universität München) and Swiss architect Armando Ruinelli, selected a shortlist of 16 finalists among the 76 competing projects, from which, in turn, the four winning projects were chosen. Four commendations and a special mention were also awarded. In their report, the jury stressed how the competing works have made it possible to take stock of the state of architecture in Tyrol, with works that tackle the relationship between old and new in an innovative way, created with a careful choice of materials and the adoption of high-quality standards. In particular, the jury emphasised that the high quality achieved mainly concerns buildings used as cultural institutions, museums, libraries, schools and sports facilities. In contrast to these works aimed at the public, private homes and residential architectures, on the other hand, appear to be lagging behind.
Many competing projects are interventions carried out on existing structures, to expand or renovate existing buildings, in some cases, adding a sense of architectural dignity to buildings that otherwise did not have particular merits. For the jurors, this indicates an important change of pace, considering the existing building stock not only in terms of "spaces", but also as valuable material resources to achieve the climate goals being pursued globally.
Finally, the jury also highlighted the important role played by architectural competitions in identifying the best and most innovative design ideas. It is therefore no coincidence that many of the awarded projects are winners of architectural competitions.
