A house of sophisticated, refined elegance: this is how the RIBA South West Award 2017 jury described Hill House, designed by architects Mike Keys and Anne Claxton in Bath.

Mike Keys and Anne Claxton Hill House, an elegant house in Bath

Hill House, designed by architects Mike Keys and Anne Claxton, has been built in an area of Bath that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The house is located in a panoramic position on a hill and overlooks a Georgian terrace, the style that characterises the most important historic buildings in this spa town.

The project replaced a previous building, a 1970s bungalow, and the architects decided to preserve some of the elements on-site like the long stone wall that delimits the property on the side of the road and continues with a long hedge along its border. The house is positioned behind the hedge and is the same height as the old stone wall. As with the past building, the house appears from this Northern side to be solid and compact , by contrast, on the opposite side is has large windows with rooms that open onto the garden to enjoy the panoramic views over the town of Bath.

The RIBA regional awards jury has given the building theRIBA South West Award 2017. The modernity of the project that respects its historic, protected setting was much appreciated, as was the house’s sophisticated, refined elegance.
