David Chipperfield Architects Nobel Center plans

Construction of the new Nobel Center designed by David Chipperfield is due to begin in 2017. The plans and recent developments of the project were discussed at a public presentation in Stockholm on May 24.

The "Nobel Prize House" will stand on Blasieholmen peninsula in a panoramic position above the city. Most of the building will be open to the public, and a number of changes have been made to the proposal originally submitted in the international design competition precisely in order to underline the building’s public nature.
The auditorium that will host the Nobel Prize ceremony and other cultural and scientific events has become an element linking the construction’s different levels, while the restaurant and coffee shop have been moved to the upper part of the building.
The building’s shape has been changed somewhat to underline its division into three parts: lower level, intermediate level and upper level. The rhythm of the thin vertical elements made of bronze marking the façade is not constant. The lower density of these thin strips in the upper part of the building makes it more transparent and offers visitors panoramic views of the city.
