Gleneagles Community Centre, Patkau Architects.
The multipurpose centre in West Vancouver, first public building in North America designed using the Swiss Bâtiment Isotherme (Batiso) concept, proves that even ten years down the track, the efficiency of the sustainable design choices for “green” leisure time are still valid today.

When Patkau Architects built the Gleneagles Community Centre for the citizens of West Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003, the design of buildings that integrated structural systems to foster environmental sustainability and minimise costs was brand new for the North American continent. Indeed, this building was designed with mechanical and electrical systems, including: radiant heating and cooling provided by a thermo-active concrete slab floor and fresh air displacement ventilation,

Almost a decade after the opening of the centre – which offers a central gymnasium, a crèche, multipurpose spaces, a coffee shop and offices – not only has it not lost any of its charm but it has also proven the environmental efficiency of the design choices.

Located on a hillside adjacent to a golf course, the topography influenced the composition of the architecture so almost all areas have direct outside access.

The primary building material is wood, chosen for its cost effectiveness, its sustainability and its warm appearance.

The shed-like roof is more than just a roof: because of its shape, it promotes air flow inside for the displacement ventilation system. It also collects and directs storm water back to the ground. The overhands protect the windows from rain and shields interiors from excessive solar loads.

So, Patkau Architects provides welcoming, bright, airy spaces with proven sustainability over the years.
