3LDH Mulini Beach, Croatia

Croatian architecture firm 3LDH has designed Mulini Beach in Rovinj, a tourist resort on the Adriatic sea in Croatia. A project that underscores the ties with the land and its environmental changes caused by the tides.



As part of the work to rebuild the seafront promenade of Rovinj in Croatia, architecture firm 3LDH designed Mulini Beach, which seamlessly connects Punta Corrente park in the tourist resort with the boardwalk.



The 3LHD architects responded to both the site topography and to the need to give the town some seaside facilities so locals and tourists could get the best use from the natural beauty.



The influence of the tides (here the sea level can change by about 80 cm) influenced the decision to structure Mulini Beach in two areas – one impacted by waves and another, much calmer bay area. The design of the former plays with the idea of the waves, offering sleek walkways, seating and containers for plants, the movements of which reference waves breaking on the shore. 





The second part responds to the calmer bay with a gently sloping pebble beach. The lush vegetation and the variety of materials used to create this environment express serenity and relaxation.





Mulini Beach Bar is located in the centre of the zone. This is a great location at any time of the day, and the pavilion made from locally sourced stone is set off with a white steel pergola roof, whose shape was determined by a study of the sun’s movement in summer.  The 30-metre long pergola is supported by six points only, so it looks like it’s floating above the bar, making it the distinguishing trait of the architectural design by 3LHD, who selected photographer Joao Morgado to best tell the story of this harmonious engagement of architecture and landscape.
