320° Licht, light installation by Urbanscreen at the Gasometer Oberhausen

“320° Licht – Spatial Experience” is a light installation at the Gasometer in Oberhausen, Germany. Urbanscreen, a Bremen-based team of artists tackles reality and virtual spaces as part of the exhibition titled “The Appearance of Beauty” in this towering space.



Urbanscreen is a team of multidisciplinary artists from Bremen, Germany and since 2005, they have been exploring the potential of urban space and more, using different kinds of media to project their work onto large architectural works.





What better space for this than the large gasometer in Oberhausen, Germany? The Gasometer in the Ruhr basin is the perfect example of how old, industrial facilities can be converted and put to cultural use for the community. Its large size – 100 metres high and covering an area of about 20,000 square metres – makes it the perfect screen for a play of lights and shapes at 320°. The largest indoor projection of its kind in the world.



Patterns of light trace the nooks and crannies of this large industrial building, with its cathedral-like beauty, creating optical illusions and involving spectators on an imaginary tour that seems to dissolve the interiors of this great landmark of Oberhausen. 





Exploring the subtle differences between what is real and what is virtual in the world of art.
