BROOKS + SCARPA, Orange Grove private residence

In West Hollywood, California, Brooks + Scarpa?s plan for a single-family home offers an opportunity to propose an alternative to the traditional bungalows in the area.

The building stands out from the nearby homes right away for its façade, which the architects of Brooks + Scarpa designed as a composition of regular volumes.
Cubes jut out or are set in from the level of the façade to create shadows, solids and hollows, giving the home a three-dimensional look and establishing a new relationship with the street and passersby.

The building is a subtle play of balanced tensions, like a sculpture moulded by the architects, whose approach to design recalls the nearby Schindler house designed by Rudolf Schindler in 1922, an icon of Californian modernism.
