Architecture as a stage set Francesco Giunta portrays Genoa, the city where he lived for so long, as a study in photographic composi-tion. His images are glimpses of perspectives in which architecture serves as a backdrop or stage set with a focal point on infinity, multiplying the city. In many of his photographs of Genoa in the “appunti genovesi” series, the eyes is positioned above the horizon, revealing an understanding of the place and of what is waiting for the observer who goes beyond the extemporaneous snapshot. What emerges here is Giunta’s ability to go back to places again and again in order to “possess” them in full, get to know their beauty and find their true point of revelation. He says that “you can’t help taking ugly pictures the first time you visit a place”. In other photographs in the series, the point of view is precisely on the horizon, and so the revelation lies elsewhere, in the synchronism between events, or in the rhythm with which they are presented.
