SEI: art and design, reuse and sociability
Parma, Italy, Fornovo di Taro, Parma, Italy,
It didn’t take much to give a new lease on life to a building that was practically falling down: a few pallets, some canvas, ropes, barrels and a little elbow grease. The result is SEI, "practically an art district", a temporary meeting-place built for the thirty-first Fiera di Fornovo by Collettivo Limitrofi combining sustainability, creativity and design.
Some of the rooms have been made into an apartment in contemporary style, while others appear to have been abandoned, though on closer inspection the infiltrations in the walls, the dusty beams, the structures made out of old pallets, the carefully designed lighting and the artistic installations reveal how the contrast can create a setting capable of amazing visitors of all kinds.
The setting/event was a great success over its five-day lifespan, with the support of the arts organisations involved, an effective publicity campaign and, above all, the evocative location chosen by the organisers. Creativity and sustainability come together to create new ways of reusing abandoned buildings.
