DP Architects sustainable award-winning industrial architecture Singapore-based DP Architects has won “Design of the Year” 2015 at the tenth President's Design Awards for its design of the head offices of Sunray Woodcraft Construction called the Sunray Headquarters.

How can offices, factory and accommodation be merged in a single, attractive building in the middle of a dull, industrial hub in Singapore? This was the challenge facing DP Architects  - known to our readers for their projects uniting sustainability and beauty, from the River Safari theme park to the Singapore Sports Hub, the Four Acres Building and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (STUD) with UN Studio - and they rose to the occasion with Sunray Headquarters.

An industrial building that won “Design of the Year” 2015 at the tenth President's Design Awards in Singapore, awarded specifically to constructions that have a positive impact on people, also in the industrial area, elegantly and respectfully combining form and function.

The 16,824 sq. metre building designed by DP Architects is divided into boxes, each of which is enveloped by louvers and a yellow skin - referencing the furniture manufacturer's corporate colour. The interiors are a streamlined sequence of spaces separated by function, accompanying each stage of production and the flow of people without compromising safety.

Adjustable horizontal louvres allow ventilation and natural light inside, and vertical louvres provide privacy in the workers' dormitories, as well as shade and privacy for the offices.

Simple, but highly efficient solutions to create a welcoming feel inside, and a pleasant visual surprise in the drab industrial zone. And not surprisingly, this design approach has won the highest accolade; hopefully it will now be picked up and repeated in Singapore and elsewhere.
