Barcelona, Elche Headquarters by MESURA

Barcelona’s Eixample district is home to the headquarters of Elche. The building on Plaza Cerdà was recently redesigned by Catalonian architectural studio MESURA.
The key to the project was restoring the original architectural elements to the central role they deserved. The floor is the most characteristic aspect of the building: 130 square metres covered with various different textures and mosaics representing the highly fragmented original division of space in the building. All non-structural walls have been eliminated to create the big, well-lit spaces the client wanted. The few remaining weight-bearing walls reveal the texture of the bricks, which are painted white to maintain the focus on the floor and the building’s heterogeneous character. The finishes are another important part of the project: bricks and electrical wiring are left in view, contrasting with the classical decoration at certain points on the ceiling and the elegant style of the window frames and adding an element dynamism to the space.
