Renzo Piano, Kimbell Art Museum pavilion

The new pavilion designed by Renzo Piano for Kimbell Art Museum, the Texas museum designed by Louis Khan in 1971, opened with an exhibition of masterpieces from the museum’s permanent collection including paintings by Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Rembrandt and sculptures by Donatello and Bernini.

Set in a stand of elm and oak trees not far from Louis Khan’s original building, Renzo Piano’s pavilion is a lightweight construction of glass, concrete and wood.

The pavilion consists of two volumes connected by glassed-in hallways. The first, the east wing, is a glass hall through which visitors enter two galleries: the south gallery for temporary exhibitions and the north gallery containing the permanent collection. The second structure, the west wing, houses the auditorium, a little exhibition space specially designed for light-sensitive works of art, a library and teaching spaces.
