DMOA Architecten: House Karla en Koen. Communicating architecture! A special house, where the team from DMOA Architecten designed everything - from the garden to the interiors.  It fits the family’s brief and needs perfectly, just like a tailored suit or custom artwork.

The DMOA Architecten studio from Leuven in Belgium, designed a single-family home in 2005. Not just any old residential project but a contemporary freestanding house with clean, sleek lines, like many others, but house Karla en Koen has something more – the whole setting was made to measure for a family with kids and a dog.

The architects and owners worked so closely and well together that they developed a kind of design empathy that really shows in the details. But these little things are hidden from the naked eye, and they can’t even be appreciated in photos because they only reveal their mystery with human interaction.

So, what better way to communicate the architecture than with a video?  The architects called in a videomaker, Gonzales Mixed Media Agency, that captured the true essence of the building by showing its inhabitants as they move around it. The resulting short film has an almost surreal feel and has captured that intrinsic poetry of the project that would otherwise have remained hidden.

Because unless the architecture is to be an end in itself, it only makes sense when it is actively use, in real life.
