Building in the landscape: Hunting Lodge by Basarch
A hunting lodge in the Czech Republic designed by architecture firm, Basarch, shows the extent to which contemporary architecture can come up with solutions that are even suitable for such archaic pastimes as hunting, ensuring that it fits into the setting.

The game reserve that is home to the “Hunting Lodge” is located near the river Thaya, whose meanderings create a natural landscape of rare beauty, with very little human interference.

Given this situation, the project by Basarch seeks to minimise the impact of this new building in the environment, incorporating the architecture that houses rooms and facilities for hunters and a large common room, as a natural extension of the land.

The green fields extend continuously onto the roof of the building that is open on one side only, with glass windows and the entrance, since the rear has been built into the planted hillside.

The external walls are made from stone in gabions that will eventually be covered by native vegetation, camouflaging the human intervention even further.

GThe interiors have been kept simple and the textured reinforced concrete ceiling in the main communal room has a skylight to let in natural light. Wood furniture dominates and sets off the hunters’ trophies displayed on the walls.

Aided by the design that is attentive to the rhythms of nature, the stacks of firewood against the façade will very soon be the only tangible sign of the presence of humans in this lodge.
