The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has announced the skyscrapers winning prizes in various categories in 2012. For the first time an award has been presented to a skyscraper built in Italy, the Palazzo della Regione Lombardia housing the offices of the Region of Lombardy, one of the four regional winners, one on each continent.
The four buildings were selected on the basis of a number of different criteria: design, technical innovation, sustainability, improvement of their urban context and of living conditions for the populace.
In addition to Palazzo Lombardia in Milan, the winner on the European continent, awards were assigned to the Absolute Towers in Mississauga - Canada (the Americas), 1 Bligh Street in Sydney (Asia and Australia) and the Doha Tower in Doha (the Middle East and Africa). The Innovation Award was presented to a fifth skyscraper, the Al Bahar Towers in Abu Dhabi, while prizes for lifetime achievement were presented to architect Helmut Jahn and structural engineers Charles Thornton and Richard Tomasetti.
