Farewell to architect Henning Larsen

Danish architect Henning Larsen, whose recent HARPA Concert Hall and Conference Centre project in Reykjavik (Iceland) won the 2013 Mies Van Der Rohe European Union award for contemporary architecture, died recently.

Henning Larsen founded his studio in 1959 and is considered one of Denmark’s most prolific modern architects, working all over the world in a career spanning more than 50 years. His most important projects include the Copenhagen Business School Dalgas Have and the Royal Danish Opera in Denmark, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Embassy in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) and Malmö City Library in Malmö (Sweden).
Between 1968 and 1995 he taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Faculty of Architecture in Copenhagen, where he himself had studied.
His architectural projects are remembered especially for use of light, and in fact a number of architecture critics and academics have called him the "master of light".
Larsen himself identified the key materials in his projects as space and light.
