A simple building which instantly reveals to the public how it was built: this is the intention of architect James Biber of Biber Architects in New York, who designed the USA pavilion for Expo Milano 2015.
Inspired by the traditional American barn, to which the architect pays homage, the pavilion is a completely sustainable open construction on multiple levels accessed via a wooden walkway.
The distinctive elements of the construction are a big vertical farm, producing a harvest every day, and a walkway made of wood repurposed from the Coney Island boardwalk.
The USA's theme at Expo, American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet is addressed in video installations and interactive exhibits focusing on industry, products and business initiatives concerned with sustainable nutrition and health, technology and innovation.
The pavilion has been shortlisted for the World Architecture Award 2015.
