The Jafeer, a basket woven from palm leaves, is the architectural element characterising the Qatar Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015.

The theme of Qatar's participation in Expo Milano 2015 is “Seeding Sustainability: Innovative Solutions for Food Security”, documenting the country's commitment to responsible management of water and the resources of the land in search of innovative solutions that are socially, economically and ecologically sustainable.

The pavilion is built on three levels, with the ground floor recreating a characteristic Souk paying homage to the traditions and local products of Qatar. The first floor is divided into five sections documenting different aspects of the country, from the solutions implemented to improve productivity of a country that is largely desert and has very little water, to life in Qatar seen from different points of view and to the culture of food and a number of important rituals and practices, such as the rite of drinking coffee or fasting during Ramadan.

The top floor is the heart of the pavilion, a round volume with forms and finishes reminiscent of the Jafeer, a basket made be weaving palm leaves, a typical element of Qatari culture used to store and carry food.

During Expo Milano 2015, SpazioFMGperl'Architettura will hold a talk on June 18 about Qatari architecture by SWA South West Architecture.
