Metrogramma Doha at the Qatar Green Building Council

On April 27 2015, during the annual Qatar Green Building Council in Doha, Qatar, architect Alberto Francini Metrogramma presented the Green Desert Shadow Prototype research project developed with Franco Masello.
In his lecture, Alberto Francini emphasised the importance of the morphology of buildings for creating a comfortable microclimate in arid regions. The goal of the Green Desert Shadow Prototype study was in fact identification of a type of construction that could improve the quality of life of people living in urban environments subject to extreme climatic conditions.
Having set forth the principal guidelines, such as how to improve the buildings’ orientation and type of construction to make the most of natural ventilation and convective motion to cool the building; creation of large green areas to reduce carbon dioxide and control humidity and temperature naturally, the project looked at a number of different alternative scenarios and assessed their energy costs and emissions. The upside-down pyramid type building with only a few levels was identified as a shape that acts as an umbrella, creating shade and permitting creation of green spaces, making it possible to cut energy costs and CO2 emissions.
