Wilkinson Eyre Architects planned the renovation of Weston Library at Oxford University, one of the United Kingdom’s most important libraries.
Weston Library contains some of the country’s most valuable books, and Wilkinson Eyre Architects’ project adapted the structure to meet today’s standards of conservation.
The library is part of the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. The original building was designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott in 1930s and was a heritage building; the renovation project is part of a wider-ranging plan for renovation of all the Bodleian Library buildings.
Wilkinson Eyre Architects gave the building a new entrance and archives with high standards for conservation of its heritage of books and manuscripts. The architects did away with a number of levels in the central part of the building and replaced them with a lecture hall and research area, and rebuilt some of the underground storage areas. The project also concerned the identity of Weston Library, improving the building’s relationship with its surroundings and establishing a direct link with the Bodleian offices.
