David Chipperfield: Saint Louis Art Museum expansion

Architect David Chipperfield designed the East Building, the new Saint Louis Art Museum expansion that opened at the end of June 2013. The building designed by the British architect is a polished concrete parallelepiped that incorporates local aggregate stone from the Missouri river and adjoins the museum?s main, neoclassical building designed by American architect Cass Gilbert for the 1904 World?s Fair.

The façade of the East Building features large, floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the views out to the surrounding landscaping as well as into the exhibition spaces, which visitors access directly from the new grand stair and ramps. David Chipperfield design increases the public space by 30% and adds a total of 21 new galleries to the Saint Louis Art Museum, for both collection and temporary exhibitions, mainly dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
