Renzo Piano Harvard Art Museums

The new Harvard Art Museums designed by Renzo Piano concentrate three museums in a single building: the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, with a total of 250,000 exhibits, a vast collection including items from Europe, North Africa and Asia.
The renewed and expanded building will open on November 16 2014 with a series of initiatives intended primarily for Harvard students and professors.
At the centre of the structure and the composition is the Calderwood Courtyard, originally the centre of the Fogg Museum. The courtyard has been renovated, inspired by an Italian piazza, with big arcades on the ground floor allowing visitors to move freely around the new building. The Calderwood Courtyard is a square structure with a strong vertical orientation, closed in by a glass roof that allows daylight to penetrate into the heart of the building. It is the heart of the centre’s activities and of the routes through the structure, and all levels in the building overlook this central void, so that it is possible to see across it into the building’s different levels.
