Laprimastanza Coworking Kilowatt in Bologna

The Greenhouses at Margherita Gardens, the annexed “custodian’s building” and the “lion cage” were built in the early 19th century, and are now owned by the city of Bologna, which commissioned the Kilowatt association to transform them into an incubator for start-ups and freelancers.
In a context like this, architecture is not only the container but the content too, and it participates in the process of transformation along with other forms of expression.
This transformation took place with the aid of architects Davide Agostini, Matteo Battistini, Steve Camagni and Francesco Ceccarelli of the Laprimastanza collective. In the “custodian’s building”, the first step in the project, the architects chose a bright blue for the floor, representing “the great ocean of the mind and the spirit”. The co-working spaces follow one upon another in a non-stop flow, and are islands made up of triangular waxed iron tables which can easily be put together to make workstations with the utmost flexibility and varying degrees of privacy.
The walls around the outside of the building are covered with a bookcase made of iron reinforcement rods with wooden shelves and waxed iron chests. The neon lights of the lighting system are left bare, in full view.
